 | This Hartwick Classic Leadership Case Study®, based on two speeches delivered by Queen Elizabeth I of England, invites readers to consider how a leader can effectively forge a group of politically diverse followers into a devoted community of supporters. The first speech is an address expressing Queen Elizabeth's love for her subjects as well as her military intentions. This speech was given to her troops as they readied themselves to face the Spanish Armada. The second, was a statement to Parliament of her views on the responsibilities and duties of sovereigns towards their subjects. This case study examines one ruler's thoughtful reflections on her role, prerogatives and relationship to her subjects.
